Hendersonville, Tennessee is a medium-sized town in Sumner County. However, despite only being a medium-sized community it is the largest community in the county, 11th largest in the state and the fourth largest community in the Nashville Metropolitan Area. It is located on the shore of Old Hickory Lake approximately eight miles northeast of Downtown Nashville. It operates with a mayor/alderman form of government with a thirteen member board. The city motto is “The City by the Lake” and it has a humid subtropical climate. It is a wealthy community compared to state and federal economic statistics and has a mixed workforce and job market. Around 32% of all adults in Hendersonville possess four-year degrees or more, which is well above the national education average in the United States. English is the primary language in the community followed by Spanish and Chinese. The town is somewhat diverse and definitely warm and welcoming to newcomers.

The area was settled in 1784 and one of the earliest settlers was Daniel Smith. However, the community is named for William Henderson another early settler. The community was incorporated for the first time in 1901 and was re-incorporated in 1969. At the time of its second incorporation, the town has approximately 250 residents. Since that time it has been one of the states fastest growing communities. Today, it remains one of the most populous suburbs of Nashville. Rock Castle is a state historic site and the former home of Daniel Smith. Rock Castle was constructed from 1784-1791. Another historic structure in the town is Old Hickory Dam, constructed in 1954.

Hendersonville spans approximately 31.37 square miles. In 2010, the population was 51,372 and the population density was 1,637.6 people per square mile. By 2016, the population was estimated at 57,050. In 2015, the estimated median household income in the community was $64,339 the estimated per capita income was $33,481. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was $213,825, the price on all housing units was $241,112 and the median gross rent was $1,069. All of these statistics serve to show that Hendersonville is a community that is thriving and growing in terms of both population and the local economy.

Public education is predominantly provided by the schools of the Sumner County School District. Public schools in Hendersonville include Henderson High School, Knox Doss Middle School at Drakes Creek, Jack Anderson Elementary School, Merrol Hyde Magnet School and others. Private schools in Hendersonville include Hendersonville Christian Academy and Pope John II High School. The city has four beautiful parks, Drakes Creek Park, Veterans Park, Memorial Park and Volunteer Park at Arrowhead.
